Faith & Culture Conference: Art & Revelation
Join the Alcuin Institute for Catholic Culture for our annual Faith & Culture Conference!
Featuring keynote speakers Dr. Jared Staudt, Dr. Joshua Hren, and Dr. Aaron Henderson, and highlighting the work of local artist Hollie Stokes, we will examine the importance and significance of art & beauty in communicating God's self-revelation. Participants will learn of the various ways that the Church has historically used art to communicate the truth of God and His creation, and explore some ways that Catholics today can continue the beautiful artistic traditions of the Church, and communicate the truth of God to an aesthetically deadened age.
Registration for the event is $12, and includes conference admission, lunch, and an afternoon social. Catholic School Personnel can receive three (3) CSO ongoing formation hours for attending this event; contact your principal for more information. He is author of The Primacy of God: The Virtue of Religion in Catholic Theology, Restoring Humanity: Essays on the Evangelization of Culture, and The Beer Option: Brewing a Catholic Culture Yesterday & Today. Socratic Convivia
Join the Alcuin Institute for one of our signature Socratic Convivia—our fancy way of saying food, friendship, and good conversation centered around a particular set of primary sources! In keeping with the Diocesan formation theme Revelation: Natural & Divine, we will take a look at various subjects such as the nature of truth, the harmony of faith and reason, the relationship between Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition, and the tensions that seem to exist between faith and the findings of modern science.
In this first gathering, we will take a look at some texts from classic thinkers such as Aristotle, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. Augustine, as well as some more contemporary Catholics such as Paul VI, Frank Sheed, and Benedict XVI. Our hope is that, as we read these texts and engage in discussion, we'll be able to learn more about four central elements of God's revelation to man:
- “Quid est Veritas?”—“What is Truth?”
- What is the relationship between Faith & Reason?
- How do Scripture & Tradition fit together?
- How can we reconcile apparent contradictions between Faith & Science?
Suan Sonna: From Protestant to Catholic
Come enjoy the company of fellow Catholics as speaker, Suan Sonna, tells his conversion story from his Protestant upbringing to becoming Catholic!
Suan Sonna is a senior philosophy student at Kansas State University and a Baptist convert to Catholicism. He runs the podcast and YouTube channel Intellectual Conservatism, and has appeared on channels like Pints with Aquinas, Capturing Christianity, Gospel Simplicity, Truth Unites, and many more. Suan currently has two published papers - one in Cornell University's LOGOS undergraduate philosophy journal on ethics, and another in the Heythrop journal concerning the Biblical and historical foundations of the papacy. Suan enjoys researching the Jewish and Biblical foundations for the Catholic magisterium, social & political philosophy, and the life of His God and savior, Jesus Christ.

The Charlemagne Ball
In the not-too-distant past, it was oft said that if you went to the waltz, you might just fall in love. A simpler time, courtship and romance was a game played not in the ethereal, digital realm, but rather on the ballroom floor. And, too, this game not only represented the culture of an age past, but a worldview: a way of seeing the relationship between man and woman, and indeed, a way of seeing the relationship between God and man.
Join the Diocese of Tulsa for a romantic evening of fine dining and formal dancing, hosted by the Alcuin Institute! Registration for the evening includes a cocktail hour, formal five-course dinner, a brief waltz demonstration, and two hours of dancing, complete with live orchestra!
Tickets for the event can be purchased for $50 per person. Additional dance lessons are available.* Dress for the evening is formal waltz attire.
St. John’s Day Wine Blessing Ceremony
For ages, Catholics throughout Christendom have had their wine blessed on the feast of St. John the Apostle. The tradition originates from the legend that the Beloved Disciple of Jesus once partook of a glass of poisoned wine, but was miraculously unharmed on account of the special blessing that he gave it with the Sign of the Cross.
In the not-so-distant past, Catholics would bring their bottles and barrels of vino to the Church on the feast of St. John to have their wine solemnly blessed. The blessed wine would then be drunk by the family for protection against poisoning and the promise of good health. It would also be offered to guests throughout the year-as a most fitting gesture of Catholic hospitality.
Join us as we revive this ancient tradition of our faith! This family-friendly celebration will start with a noon Mass at Holy Family Cathedral, followed by a social, the blessing of wine, and a reception with delectable desserts! So, grab your favorite bottle of Merlot, Cab, or Rosé, and come as we "drink the love of St. John" and toast in the New Year!
