Dr. Andrew Willard Jones

 

On October 7th, 2021 the Alcuin Institute for Catholic Culture presented their annual Bl. Alcuin of York Award. They honored Dr. Andrew Willard Jones, who in turn honored them with a lecture entitled “The Weakness of Caesar and the Power of the Cross: How Martyrdom Defeats Tyrants.” The event began with Holy Mass, followed by a social, dinner, lecture, and the presentation of their signature Our Lady of Victory Medal. Dr. Andrew Willard Jones is the Director of Catholic Studies at Franciscan University and is a founding editor of the website and journal, New Polity. He is the author of Before Church and State: A Study of Social Order in the Sacramental Kingdom of St. Louis IX and most recently of The Two Cities: A History of Christian Politics. Andrew’s work focuses on a re-evaluation of our current social predicament through an authentically Catholic vision of reality. Andrew was raised in Washington State, attended Hillsdale College, earning degrees in history and economics, followed by a PhD in Medieval Church history from St. Louis University. He lives in Steubenville with his wife, Sara, and their nine kids.

Dr. John Cuddeback

 

On the feast day of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary, Dr. John Cuddeback offered the Alcuin Institute some of his insights into Catholic Culture in a signature talk entitled “Spiritual Friendship: An Image of Eternity in a Declining Culture”! John A. Cuddeback, PhD, is professor of Philosophy at Christendom College, where he has taught for twenty-five years. He lectures widely on topics including virtue, friendship, fatherhood, and household, and his professional writings appear in various academic journals and books. His book “True Freindship” is being republished by Ignatius Press. His blogging at Life-Craft.org (formerly BaconFromAcorns) is known for applying an ancient wisdom to life today, especially for revitalizing the household.

Our Lady of Victory


 

The Alcuin Institute claims Our Lady of Victory as our patroness of help. Though her prayers, we hope to succeed in our mission to promote Catholic culture. Accordingly, the Our Lady of Victory Medal is our annual award given to an eminent Catholic thinker whose work complements the mission of the Alcuin Institute. More specifically, the medal is given to a scholar whose labor has helped rally the Christain faithful togther with a shared, Catholic vision of reality.
