Real Learning

Returning to the Primary Sources of Wisdom

“I earnestly desire to inebriate others with the old wine of an even older learning”
—Bl. Alcuin of York

Alcuin understood that the movement of the mind from a state of ignorance to a state of knowledge, though at times difficult, ought not be a cold, sterile, and impersonal act that hardens the soul. Education should instead resemble a well-planned meal, advancing from course to course, each plate preparing the next, in the end leaving the guest utterly satisfied, yet somehow desiring more. The pleasure of the feast is a result of the company kept and the food served. Alcuin maintained that the best intellectual diet consisted of ‘ancient’ fare, that is ‘toothsome food’ that has been proven to cause health and vitality.

The Alcuin Institute seeks to return to this kind of education, one that is at once broad and deep, yet light and whimsical, and thoroughly grounded in the primary sources of the Christian West; the deer and pheasant to be found in our very own precincts. Such a feast among friends in Christ is “the best that life can offer.”

Faith & Culture Conference: Art & Revelation

Join the Alcuin Institute for Catholic Culture for our annual Faith & Culture Conference! Featuring keynote speakers Dr. Jared Staudt, Dr. Joshua Hren, and Dr. Aaron Henderson, and highlighting the work of local artist Hollie Stokes, we will examine the importance and significance of art & beauty in communicating God's self-revelation. Participants will learn of the various ways that the Church has historically used art to communicate the truth of God and His creation, and explore some ways that Catholics today can continue the beautiful artistic traditions of the Church, and communicate the truth of God to an aesthetically deadened age. Registration for the event is $12, and includes conference admission, lunch, and an afternoon social. Catholic School Personnel can receive three (3) CSO ongoing formation hours for attending this event; contact your principal for more information. Socratic Convivia

Join the Alcuin Institute for one of our signature Socratic Conviviaour fancy way of saying food, friendship, and good conversation centered around a particular set of primary sources! In keeping with the Diocesan formation theme Revelation: Natural & Divine, we will take a look at various subjects such as the nature of truth, the harmony of faith and reason, the relationship between Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition, and the tensions that seem to exist between faith and the findings of modern science. In this first gathering, we will take a look at some texts from classic thinkers such as Aristotle, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. Augustine, as well as some more contemporary Catholics such as Paul VI, Frank Sheed, and Benedict XVI. Our hope is that, as we read these texts and engage in discussion, we'll be able to learn more about four central elements of God's revelation to man:
  1. “Quid est Veritas?”—“What is Truth?”
  2. What is the relationship between Faith & Reason?
  3. How do Scripture & Tradition fit together?
  4. How can we reconcile apparent contradictions between Faith & Science?
As always, our conversation will be augmented with an abundance of fine food and drink, so invite a friend and “come, let us reason together!”

Revelation & Docility: St. Joseph as Model

Come celebrate the feast of St. Joseph with the Alcuin Institute! In honor of this great saint, and in honor of the recently-ended Year of Saint Joseph, we are pleased to have our newest faculty member, Dr. Aaron Henderson, offer a meditation on St. Joseph, entitled“Revelation & Docility: St. Joseph as Model.” Though the Bible says precious little about St. Joseph, and despite the fact that none of the man’s words are recorded, this great saint has much to teach us about our fundamental posture in the face of God’s revelation, which is His free act of self-disclosure. St. Joseph is presented as open and docile to God’s word, much like his immaculate spouse. His rather obscure role in the biblical text conveys a profound receptivity and humility, to be sure, but this does not mean that St. Joseph is inactive. Rather, we often encounter Joseph in his faith-filled actions, as when he rescues Mary and the child Jesus by taking them into Egypt. In short, Joseph is a model to us both of the docility and humility we ought to have when met with God’s saving truth, and of the faith-filled obedience we ought to exhibit as a response to this revelation. So, come on out, and join us as we gather under the tutelage of this great Father of the Church!
Dr. Aaron Henderson is a Catholic theologian working for the Alcuin Institute for Catholic Culture. He was raised in Missouri, educated in Kansas, Texas, and Florida, and is now finding his footing here in Eastern Oklahoma. In addition to reading and speaking about all things theological, he enjoys translating, editing, and going out with friends for a good beer or two.
